Cutting a mark on the boat to look for the sword in the river

A man from the State of Chu was crossing a river in a boat. His sword dropped into the river, and he immediately cut a mark on the side of the boat from which the sword had dropped.“This is where my sword dropped into the river,” he said. When the boat stopped, he began to look for his sword, jumping into the water from the mark cut on the boat. What a stupid man! He was unaware that while the sword was lying at the bottom of the river the boat had moved a long distance away.
